Utah moving company rules

Utah does not license movers for moves within the state. The Utah Department of Transportation's motor carrier pages describe federal USDOT registration, which companies operating commercial vehicles in intrastate commerce must have, and federal operating authority for interstate for-hire work, but no state mover permit. Consumer problems go to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection.

Other Utah rules to know

  • UDOT says companies that operate commercial vehicles hauling cargo in intrastate or interstate commerce must register with FMCSA and have a USDOT number.
  • Federal interstate operating authority applies only to for-hire moves that cross state lines.
  • With no state mover license, check the company's business registration and USDOT record before hiring.

Moving into or out of Utah? A move that crosses a state line follows federal rules instead. Check an interstate mover.
