South Dakota moving company rules
South Dakota has no state license or permit specific to movers for moves within the state. The state's former household goods carrier rules have been repealed, and the current motor carrier statute covers registration, safety and interstate filings rather than mover licensing. Complaints about in-state movers go to the Attorney General's Division of Consumer Protection.

Where to complain
Other South Dakota rules to know
- The state's credential list for commercial vehicles requires vehicle registration and proof of insurance from all operators, but no mover-specific state authority for in-state work.
- The Division of Consumer Protection will tell you whether complaints have been filed against a mover you are considering.
- State consumer guidance advises avoiding movers that cannot give an address or licensing information, rely only on phone or online estimates, or ask for a large deposit.
- Never sign a document that releases a mover from liability for missing or damaged items, and do not sign paperwork that is largely blank.
- A mover that crosses state lines must still hold federal registration, which you can check through the federal Protect Your Move resources.
Moving into or out of South Dakota? A move that crosses a state line follows federal rules instead. Check an interstate mover.
