Nebraska moving company rules
Companies that move household goods within Nebraska must hold a license from the Nebraska Public Service Commission. Licenses last one year, require proof of liability and cargo insurance, and cover the whole state unless the mover limits its territory. The Commission no longer sets moving rates, but licensed movers must file their rates with it and follow its rules on estimates, paperwork, and claims.

Estimates
Before the move, a licensed mover must give you a written binding or non-binding estimate at least 24 hours ahead, unless the move is booked less than 24 hours out. The mover must physically survey your goods unless they are more than 50 miles from the mover's location or you waive the survey in writing. Shipments on a non-binding estimate must be weighed on a certified scale, except moves within city limits or under 20 miles.
Liability for loss or damage
The mover must give you a written explanation of the limits of its liability and the valuation options available, and the bill of lading must include a valuation declaration you sign. The mover's liability is limited to the terms of the bill of lading. The mover must acknowledge a written claim within 30 days and pay, deny, or make a firm offer within 120 days.
Insurance or bond
Licensed household goods movers must carry at least $750,000 in liability insurance plus at least $5,000 in cargo insurance, filed with the Commission.

- Applicants must submit a fingerprint-based background check, their USDOT number, and their Nebraska principal place of business.
- For moves outside city limits and longer than 20 miles, the mover must give you a written inventory of each load.
- The Commission investigates complaints about people moving household goods for hire without a license or insurance.
