Montana moving company rules
Montana does not license or certify companies that move household goods within the state. The motor carrier classes in Montana law now cover regular-route carriers, garbage haulers, and transportation network carriers, and none of them covers household goods movers. The Montana Public Service Commission says it does not handle consumer issues about motor carriers other than certain passenger services and garbage hauling.

Other Montana rules to know
- Montana law still defines household goods in its motor carrier chapter, but the certificate classes that once covered household goods movers have been repealed.
- With no state mover license to check, confirm the company is registered with the Montana Secretary of State and ask for proof of insurance in writing.
- The Office of Consumer Protection takes complaints about unfair or deceptive business practices; it asks you to contact the business first and accepts complaint forms by mail or fax.
- A move that crosses state lines falls under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, not the state.
Moving into or out of Montana? A move that crosses a state line follows federal rules instead. Check an interstate mover.
