Mississippi moving company rules

Mississippi treats household goods movers as common or contract carriers that need a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, applied for through the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Applicants must show liability and cargo insurance at federal minimums before operating. State law says the commission does not regulate household goods movers' rates, and roadside enforcement belongs to the Department of Public Safety.

Insurance or bond

MDOT's guidelines require insurance matching 49 CFR Part 387: $750,000 liability for non-hazardous property, and cargo coverage of $5,000 for loads of three tons or less and $10,000 for loads over three tons.

Other Mississippi rules to know

  • The commission holds a hearing on each certificate application no sooner than 20 days after filing and weighs the applicant's fitness and finances.
  • Applicants not based in Mississippi must file a BOC-3 form naming process agents.
  • By statute the commission has no power to regulate the rates of household goods carriers, so prices are set by the mover.
  • The Department of Public Safety's Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division enforces motor carrier law on the roads.
