Delaware moving company rules

Delaware has no transportation agency that licenses movers or sets rules for in-state moves. Every business in Delaware needs a state business license from the Division of Revenue, and movers fall in the 'drayperson or mover' license category, which covers anyone who transports other people's property for profit. That license is a business and tax license; no Delaware rules on mover estimates, liability or insurance were found.

Other Delaware rules to know

  • Delaware law defines a 'drayperson or mover' as any business that transports other people's tangible personal property for profit, and requires that business to hold a license.
  • You can check whether a mover holds a current Delaware business license on the Division of Revenue's license search.
  • The Delaware Public Service Commission's governing law covers utilities such as electric, gas, water and telephone service; no motor carrier or mover chapter appears in it.
  • The Delaware Department of Justice Consumer Protection Unit takes complaints about businesses and often resolves contract disputes through informal mediation.
  • For a move to or from another state, check the mover in FMCSA's mover search, which lists interstate movers only.

Moving into or out of Delaware? A move that crosses a state line follows federal rules instead. Check an interstate mover.
